PRODUCTS TO HELP ON YOUR TRANSITIONING JOURNEY

So you’ve finally decided to transition to natural! HOORAY! You may be clueless or you may be a pro (via all the research you’ve done) But either way, we are here to help! Remember our last post on tips before you transition. If you haven’t read that, make sure you do. It’s a good one.

We want you to see the transitioning journey as an exciting one. You’d discover more about yourself, your hair and your lifestyle in general.

In this post, we would be discussing products that we trust will help you train your curl pattern, improve a healthy scalp, reduce breakage and promote hair growth.

We will put these products in categories. Cleanse, Deep condition, Moisture, Seal,  grow, protect and style so you have a better knowledge on their uses.

CLEANSE.

  1. As someone transitioning/natural you need a shampoo and conditioner that will not dry out your hair but still keep it squeaky clean. One that is sustainable, lathers well and won’t finish after one wash because you know we are all heavy handed with conditioner lol.  We recommend the Creme of nature sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, Inecto naturals shea shampoo and conditioner, Tresemme deep cleansing shampoo and tresemme moisture rich conditioner.

2. DEEP CONDITION

Being natural our hair is prone to more dryness, and due to our ‘coil’ pattern, it’s harder for products to travel down the hair shaft. Put away the eggs, those specific home made mixtures cause more harm than good. You would need some nice smelling, heavy duty masques and treatments. Our favourites are as follows! Aussie 3 min deep conditioners, Natural classic henna deep conditoner, Mamiya hair mayonnaise, Aunt jackies coco repair and Africa’s best originals hair mayonnaise.

3. MOISTURE

Your hair needs all the moisture you it can get. You need great leave-in conditioners that will leave your hair soft and manageable. Combing and styling won’t be a hazard. We all want to be toned but certainly not from combing our hair. Here are some great leave-ins that retain moisture after washing, keep hair supple, easier to detangle and smelling great. As I am leave in conditioner, Aunt jackie’s Knot on my watch instant detangling therapy, Creme of nature strength and shine leave in conditioner,  Hawaiian silky 14 in 1 miracle worker , Sunny isle knot free forever detangling leave-in, and the Aphogee balancing moisturiser.

4. SEAL

Your hair cuticles are exposed and there are some oils that help in sealing your hair. After applying your leave-ins you need oils to close the cuticle. These are oils or balms that do not penetrate the hair shaft  and are best used to lock in moisture to your strands. Great examples are Jamaican black castor oil, Jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil Shea butter, Grape seed oil, and argan oil.

5. Grow

There are oils and creams that contain ingredients that stimulate hair growth. This products help in ‘waking up’ our follicles by increasing the flow of blood to those areas. Be it on your over all scalp, edges or nape. Our top picks are Sunny isle Jamaican black castor oil, rosemary oil, tea tree oil, pimento oil, virgin hair fertiliser, emu oil and el-glittas natural oil.

6. PROTECT

No matter what you do to your hair you need to be extremely gentle and hedge against any damage or breakage. This includes sleeping with a satin bonnet or silk pillowcase.Using a wide tooth comb and softbrushes when styling or if for any reason you use heat, ensure you use a heat protectant prior!

7. STYLE

You need to wear your hair out, you want to rock those amazing styles you see on youtube. You need curl puddings, hair gels to sleek your buns, hair bands, and style milks! We’ve got a plethora of products to help you achieve long lasting styles with sheen.
